Britons are urged to check if they can make a simple switch to save over £100 a year on energy bills.

A study by Quotezone.co.uk has found over a third of households leave their devices on standby without knowing this is needlessly adding to their bills.

Greg Wilson, CEO and price comparison expert with the group, said: “We wanted to offer some really simple solutions to try and help those struggling to cut their bills.

“By leaving your daily appliances and devices on standby mode, you are needlessly draining energy and funds.

“By getting into the habit of switching off all appliances and devices, homeowners could save as much as £103 a year – money which could help combat other surging household bills.”

These are the top 10 energy-draining devices and the yearly extra costs:

• TV – £5.70
• Games consoles – £27.52
• Dishwasher – £7.44
• Desktop computer – £13.39
• Laptop – £10.41
• Washing machine – £6.45
• Tumble dryer – £6.45
• Phone charger – £0.64
• Modem – £19.09
• Microwave – £5.95

Total – £103.04

The study also found a quarter of people are worried unplugging devices at night could damage them.

But experts say it’s best to unplug electrical items that are not in use than to leave them running.

Social housing tenants could also save as much as £400 a year on their energy bills, through a fresh raft of funding through the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.

The Government scheme is be available to 42 councils and housing associations across England.

The funding is open to applicants who had not received funding in the previous wave.

Kate Henderson, chief executive of the National Housing Federation, said: “Housing associations play a crucial role in helping the country to meet its net zero targets and are already leading the way on energy efficiency, but funding is essential for maintaining this work.

“The sector is committed to providing energy-efficient and comfortable homes for their residents that are affordable to heat, and the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund is key to enabling them to do so; I’ve seen first-hand the difference it has made.

“The funding announced today will give housing associations the certainty and confidence they need to plan and deliver more retrofit projects, tackle fuel poverty, and improve their residents’ homes.”
