British Gas will be extending its offer of half-price electricity every Sunday to bring more energy bill savings to customers this summer.
British Gas, a partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB, announced that it will now run the PeakSave scheme until at least the end of Paris 2024, which falls on September 8.
The energy provider’s PeakSave scheme offers a 50 percent discount to eligible participants on all electricity used between 11am and 4pm on Sundays.
Over 500,000 customers taking part in PeakSave Sundays have been paid almost £7million so far for moving their activities to non-peak times.
Additionally, British Gas said participants have contributed to a greener grid with 276 tonnes of Carbon emissions saved.
The energy provider said this is the same as 50,000 people travelling from London to Paris on the Eurostar.
Catherine O’Kelly, managing director of British Gas Energy at British Gas, said: “Our customers have spoken, and we’ve listened – they are loving the savings they are making with PeakSave and want to continue contributing to a greener grid.
“As a proud partner of Team GB and ParalympicsGB, we are extending the scheme until the end of Paris 2024 so that our customers can enjoy half-price electricity whilst cheering on their favourite athletes this summer.
“We are seeing huge benefits from this scheme for our customers in terms of savings and reaching their net zero goals and this is only the beginning….we hope to introduce more ways to save this summer.”
The discount is available to new and existing PeakSave customers, and all savings will appear as a credit on customers’ energy bills.
There is no obligation for people to shift their normal activities on the scheme, but households can save more by doing more energy-intensive tasks on a Sunday.
PeakSave Sundays was launched to reward customers for better energy usage to support a greener energy supply.
Typically, there is a greater amount of renewables available in the UK’s energy system on a Sunday because of lower demand from business and industry.
British Gas customers can book their free smart meter with half-hourly data and take part here.
Commenting on the scheme, Joanne Porteous, a British Gas PeakSave customer, said: “I am so happy with British Gas for the PeakSave discounts which I think is a genius idea.
“I have structured my washing, do bulk cooking and am using my tumble dryer only on a Sunday! It’s helped me form a routine which is so helpful in my busy life and I know I will be saving so much money whilst doing this.”
