British Gas, EON and EDF customers to get £219 summer boost | Personal Finance | Finance

Energy customers at major suppliers including British Gas, EON, EDF and Octopus could be in line for another handy cash boost this summer.

Other suppliers such as OVO and Scottish Power will also be passing on a legally mandated saving to customers on variable rate tariffs thanks to a change to Ofgem’s price cap this summer.

This July, Ofgem will change its price cap again following a reduction in bills in April, which means all energy suppliers will be forced to reduce their unit rates to match the new maximum price per gas and electricity unit.

Analysts at Cornwall Insight are predicting another cut to energy bills, making two in a row, which could be worth as much as 13%, which would equal a further £219.70 off the average bill per year from July.

As money expert Martin Lewis announced on an episode of his BBC Sounds The Martin Lewis podcast: “So you would probably imagine it’s going to be down. It’s currently predicted to be down 13%.”

When asked about what level you should fix at if you are considering a fixed tariff, he added: “I would suggest if you were probably looking at between down 8% and 17% that’s a pretty good range of confidence on that type of thing.”

Fixed rate customers won’t get the benefit because they’re already locked to a unit price, which is why you should carefully consider taking on a fix now, or you could end up paying more than the market rate if the price drops even further than current predictions indicate.

On the flipside, if you lock in a fix now and the savings don’t materialise as deep as expected in July, you will have price certainty in the meantime without missing out on much of a saving later, which is why Martin Lewis suggests only looking at fixes in the 8-17% range.
